Set in the heart of Perth in the exhibition space, the Perth Museum and Art Gallery is located in what is called the Marshall Monument, dedicated to the memory of Thomas Hay Marshall.
The construction of the museum began in 1822 and was opened as both a library and a museum. It was in 1925 that the museum was gifted by the owners, the Literary and Antiquarian Society of Perth to the city. It was presented on one condition that it will continue to be used only as a library or a museum and nothing else can be built on the structure.
Perth Museum and Gallery is one of the oldest established museums in the country and contains around half a million local, national, and even global objects. Their changing programs of talks, tours, exhibitions, and events celebrate the history and culture of the ever-beautiful Perthshire area.
During your visit, you will find a fantastic collection of portraits and photographs reflecting the history of the local area. There is always a wonderful and intriguing array of objects from different collections on display at the museum exploring the natural history of Perth. The gallery is also home to an extensive range of artwork including portraits created by John Everett Millais. The program of the exhibition changes regularly, so the visitors always get something new to see and admire.
There are many exhibitions held by the museum, which focuses on being family-friendly featuring interactive puzzles, trails, and games. What’s more, the Perth Museum and Gallery is completely free and offers something for all the family to enjoy.
The museum has a museum shop, perfect for buying souvenirs and gifts, and while there is no parking on site, it is located in the centre of Perth with many car parks nearby.
