For an invigorating walk that will give you stunning views across Perth, there is no better challenge than Kinnoull Hill. Standing high at 222 metres, this place offers fantastic views of the River Tay, perfect for a spot of landscape photography if the conditions are right.
Kinnoull Tower stands proudly near the summit of the hill, which was built by Lord Grey of Kinfaun in 1829. Lord Grey built the tower as an observatory, and with magnificent views, it is not hard to see why. Another reasoning behind the construction was the similarities Lord Grey noticed between the River Tay and the River Rhine and wanted to create almost a replica of what he saw in Germany in Scotland.
The walks of Kinnoull Hill offer stunning scenery with the rocky outcrop but with dense, lush woodland to wander through as you make the ascent. To summit the top of Kinnoull Hill, and reach the tower too, the paths are well-maintained but can be muddy and will be steep in some places.
What’s a great advantage for this walk is that you can start from the centre of Perth and it will take around three hours to complete the route. However, within the Kinnoull Hill Woodland Park there are many walks to enjoy across the five hills; Corsiehill, Deuchny Hill, Barn Hill, Binn Hill and the highest, Kinnoull Hill itself.
Throughout the park, you can see incredible flora and fauna and may be lucky to spot deer and even the shy red squirrels. The clean Scottish air is sure to revive the senses while the variety in the environment will keep the walks fresh and exciting. There are plenty of paths to take around the park so you can explore a range of options with every visit.
