The city of Perth is
surrounded by fertile ground and beautiful scenery, which
helped to captivate many including Sir Walter Scott. He described
it whilst approaching from the south. 'The town of Perth with
its two large measures or inches, its steeples and towers;
the hills of Moncrieff and Kinnoul faintly rising into picturesque
rocks, partly clothed with woods; the rich margin of the river
studded with elegant mansions; and the huge Grampian Mountains,
the northern screen of this exquisite landscape'.
Perth was founded in
1210 and served as Scotland's capital until the mid 1500's
when King James I was murdered. The city is of great antiquity,
situated on the banks of the river Tay and is an important
communications junction between the Lowlands and Highlands
of Scotland. It is the centre for livestock trading with the
annual Aberdeen Angus Show and Perthshire Agricultural Show.
Sadly, the city lost
all four of its monasteries during the Reformation when John
Knox's sermon in St Johns on 11 May 1559 resulted in wide
spread rioting throughout Scotland.
The city centre is
nestled between two large parklands (North Inch and South
Inch) and the spire of St John's Kirk rises high above the
city. The streets are well proportioned and have a distinctly
Georgian air. The city's rectangular street pattern suggests
it may have once been a Roman camp. It is clear that there
was Roman activity in the area but Perth's name came from
the first township, the Celtic Abertha, established by King
Kenneth Macalpine in the 9th century. Swept away in a great
flood in 1210, it was replaced by a royal burgh, founded by
William the Lion, where Perth now stands. The city offers
the visitor a wealth of shopping outlets, theatres, galleries,
and accommodation. Wide open spaces and parks ensure a quality
of life for the locals and have won awards including, Britain
in Bloom and Beautiful Scotland in Bloom. |
